The French army officer Claude Minié invented the bullet in 1849 that would bear his name. This bullet was extremely accurate and proved lethal over relatively long distances. Both Union and Confederate soldiers used the “minnie” ball (as they called it) in their muzzle-loading rifles. The Minie ball alone is estimated to have caused 100,000 deaths in the Civil War. The Civil War was considered the first modern war due to the use of many complex and modern weapons. The war was fought with old strategies, and new weapons. See a display of a variety of original guns and swords that have their origins and use during the Civil War era.
