IDOT Celebrates African-American History Month

The Illinois Department of Transportation will host a month of special events celebrating African-American History Month in February.

This year’s theme, “Uncovering Our Rich History,” will be reflected in activities focused on art, mathematics, politics, engineering and education. 

“We are proud to recognize African-American History Month with a full schedule of fun, interesting and informative events,” said IL Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. “The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.”

MLK, Jr. Day in Springfield

Springfield, IL is celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday January 15th with several events.

43rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast: January 15th at 7:30am. Breakfast will be held at the Wyndham Springfield City Centre.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity March and Annual Program: January 15th at Noon. March begins at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church located at 1800 Martin Luther King Dr.

Community Day: January 15th from 9 am - 5 pm. where the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum will celebrate his legacy with his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at 10:30am & 1:30pm.

Old Capitol Holiday Walks

Enjoy the #merryandmischief while you shop, dine and drink local: Santa and Mrs. Claus in the Old State Capitol, rides in the horse-drawn carriage, musical performances, vote for your favorite window displays, pop a letter into the Santa mailbox -- all for free.

The Old Capitol Holiday Walks are every Saturday & Wednesday, November 25th - December 20th.

Santa in the Old State Capitol

  • Saturdays: 2 pm - 5 pm
  • Wednesdays: 5 pm - 8 pm
  • Give your list to Santa while Mrs. Claus hands out candy caneschildren’s crafts and History Comes Alive presentations by General Grant and William Herndon, Lincoln’s law partner. Greeted by USCT Soldiers, part of History Comes Alive.
